It’s been a while but I’m boring and sometimes have nothing to talk about. Today I decided to install a different OS to my Steam Deck. After nearly 3 hours of struggling to get screensharing with Discord working to no avail, I came to the conclusion that SteamOS is too restrictive once you start trying to do anything unintended by Valve. I decided to try Bazzite. (This site makes my computer lag.) It has an ISO designed specifically for the Steam Deck and I can use GNOME instead of KDE which I prefer :) It’s an immutable distro which I have never used before so I’m kinda interested to see what that is like! It’s built on top of Fedora Silverblue so the packages are pretty new which is a nice bonus. It supports firmware updates for the Steam Deck which is great. So far it seems to work well but I don’t like that it comes with a dozen GNOME extensions installed and enabled by default. I enjoy the vanilla GNOME experience which is an acquired taste for sure. But so far it just seems like SteamOS but better and with more focus on the desktop. With SteamOS, the desktop mode felt like merely an afterthought and it was pretty unstable sometimes. It’s built on top of Fedora so I should get all the stability perks that come with Fedora. We’ll see how it goes! Oh also Bazzite supports LUKS encryption which I think is extremely important for a portable device so if it got stolen or something my accounts I have logged in aren’t at risk.
For some reason I’ve been interested in rougelike games lately so games like Nethack, DCSS, stuff like that. Only issue is that I have never liked fantasy settings and a lot of rougelikes are fantasy settings. I don’t know why but I just find fantasy to be really boring. I guess I usually tend to prefer settings more grounded in reality which might be why I like hard sci-fi. Maybe I’ll try one of the fantasy rougelike games anyways. Most of them are free so why not? I’d like to try DCSS at least a little bit since it can be played on the tildeverse and I know a lot of people really like it.
In other news, I set up a static site generator for this site a while ago. I initially wanted to try using Hugo but it was so frustrating to use I just gave up and used Jekyll instead. Hugo has too much magic and user-friendliness that it’s just very hard to use if you want to tune it to your own needs and the documentaion is pretty bad as well. Jekyll is much more predictable and Just Works™. It’s nice being able to write here by just using plain old markdown.
Yesterday I watched the 2014 movie Whiplash. I almost never watch movies and this was probably my first time sitting down and watching a movie in over a year. I really liked it. I enjoy media that is very nuanced and this movie was like that, especially with the ending where you’re left wondering if that it was even a good ending for the protagonist or not.
Yesterday morning somebody on a Discord server I was on tried to take down my site for basically no reason. Not the site here on the tilde but my other site. I guess they didn’t like that I was hosting copyrighted content or something? Regardless they took time out of their day to send an abuse report to the server provider I was using as a proxy for my server at home. I took down the proxy and was back online with almost no downtime but still it’s frustrating. It’s lead to a bit of an unreasonable depressive spiral where I find myself losing confidence in what I’m doing. This combined with new technical issues on my server are causing me to really lose motivation. Computers can quickly become tools of frustration when all you’re doing is fixing problems only for 3 more problems to appear immediately after…And that’s before even having to deal with people online trying to take down your hobby project just to screw with you.
I half-broke my home server today. Somehow it’s online and serving its purposes as intended but it’s unable to access anything online other than the services it is hosting! I was testing something in Wireguard that SEEMED easily reversable (since it was just modifying a config file) but after what I was trying didn’t work and I went to go reverse my changes, this issue has appeared. I’m kind of at a loss for what to do. I shouldn’t just reinstall but sometimes I feel left with no other choice. At least it’s all Docker containers so it’s not that bad. Sometimes I wonder what sysadmins do in situations like these where they are just at a complete loss for what to do and reinstalling is not an option. It makes me feel very incompetent.
I gotta get an SSG set up for this site, I’m already getting sick of copy-pasting HTML for each page.
